As the Civil War came to an end in April of 1865, many who lived in remote areas remained enslaved. This was especially the case in Texas where thousands of slaves were not made aware of freedom until June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived and issued an order officially freeing them.
Juneteenth is an incredibly important day rooted in history and hope. It reminds us of what we have fought through, and that change is possible. It is a day in which future generations will be reminded of our history and given the opportunity for reflection on what more can and needs to be done. We should all take a moment and reflect on where this country was, where it is now, and where it is going in the light of inclusion, community, and acceptance.
Find your own way to honor the history of Juneteenth. Historically, the celebration focused on education, history, culture, community, and pride. Perhaps there are ways for you to perpetuate that in your own community and bring awareness to the history and meaning behind this day.
A Google search of your area and 2023 Juneteenth celebrations will bring up a host of options, both in person and virtual. Maybe you can find one near you and participate in the history, education, and culture it is commemorating. Use what you learn to educate others and spread the message of community.
