August CEO Letter

Hello, Pearl Team!

Welcome to August (already)! The summer months have flown by and most of us are now facing the transition of summer break to a new school year.

Whether you work from home for Pearl or in an office, there is still an adjustment to be made. Some have children starting school for the first time, some are transitioning to a new school or are entering their last year of school. One common denominator no matter what phase you and your children are in is – it can be stressful. You may feel as though you have just gotten into the summer routine and now you must shift gears back into the school routine. Below are some ideas that may help with that transition.

    1. Begin to gradually adjust your schedule to earlier bedtimes and earlier mornings. A slower transition helps children adjust to the change.
    2. As the first day of school gets closer, consider setting up play dates for your child with their classmates so they can reconnect and have familiar faces on that first day back. Maybe your older children would like a back-to-school party or sleepover.
    3. Involve them in school shopping. Depending on the age of your child, they may really enjoy picking out their clothes. For younger children, a new backpack or lunch bag may be a fun way to express themselves.
    4. Take a deep breath. As a parent you want to avoid making the beginning of the school year a bigger or more stressful deal than it needs to be. Read your child’s emotions. Some children are nervous about the beginning of a new year, and some are excited – follow their cues to help support them and lead them into a successful year.
    5. Sometimes starting the year off with goals can be exciting and motivating for kids. Maybe you want to consider designing a reward system for behavior, completed homework, positivity, or grades. Enjoy a dinner with with your children and discuss a goal or reward system that they can get truly excited about.

While the above is focused on helping your child adjust to the changes – you yourself have a transition to make too! Take time for yourself. Maybe consider getting up a little earlier so you can enjoy your coffee or tea before you are off and running or use that time to work out. Taking time for yourself and what brings you peace can help you be a more positive and patient parent.

Enjoy the rest of your summer and make your upcoming school year a success!

Warm Regards,
Merry Korn, CEO
