Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging is in Pearl’s DNA!

As a social enterprise, Pearl was founded on the principle of offering hiring priority to a niche and skilled work force of those who experience barriers to employment.

Talent Acquisition and Workforce Development recognize barriers that our nation has overcome. To achieve, sustain, and enhance DEI & Belonging we want to acknowledge, Women’s Equality Day, an essential time to remember and honor the achievements of women who have fought for equal rights throughout history.

Women’s Equality Day, celebrated on August 26th, marks the progress made in the fight for gender equality. This day commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment – a crucial milestone that granted women the right to vote in 1920. Today, we not only remember the brave women who tirelessly advocated for our rights but also acknowledge that the battle for true gender parity continues.

We honor figures such as Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, and Dorothy I. Height – to name a few – who were instrumental in advancing women’s suffrage. Their dedication and resilience laid the foundation for subsequent generations to persist in championing equal rights for all genders.

We recognize and solute Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the Black Sorority that faced racism in the suffrage movement but refused to walk away. As a key event organizer, Dorothy I. Height, 10th National President and Honorary Member, Daisy Bates were the only women to speak during the official program. The sorority is commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, convening to empower our communities and protect our rights as U.S. Citizens.

It is essential to recognize that gender equality goes beyond the right to vote. Women around the world still face numerous challenges in education, employment opportunities, healthcare access, and representation in leadership positions. On Women’s Equality Day, let us not only celebrate our past victories but also commit ourselves to work collectively towards achieving true gender parity across all facets of society.

WFD recognizes Purple Heart Day

Purple Heart Day was observed first in 2014 and has been celebrated yearly on August 7th. It is a day to allow Americans to honor and remember those who bravely served our country, suffered injuries, or were killed while serving. These individuals are adorned with the Purple Heart in the name of the President. The day is usually celebrated by the military in America, which organize memorials and commemoration meetings for those who have died in combat as ceremonies to honor veterans and wounded soldiers fighting against the enemy.

Mission of the Military Order of the Purple Heart:

The mission of the Military Order of the Purple Heart is to foster an environment of goodwill and camaraderie among combat wounded veterans, promote patriotism, support necessary legislative initiatives, and most importantly, provide service to all veterans and their families. Members are Combat Wounded Veterans dedicated to our country and our veteran community who endeavor to do better for each other and by each other always. Chartered by Congress for combat wounded Veterans. The Purple Heart is composed of military men and women who received the Purple Heart Medal for wounds suffered in combat or by an act of international terrorism. Although membership is restricted to the combat wounded, they support all veterans and their families with a myriad of nation-wide programs by Chapters and National Service Officers.

‘Providing Services That Matter’

It is at our core that we not only remove barriers to employment, but that we are providing services that matter to our communities. As a social enterprise we are dedicated to making a difference.

A Conversation with Ivan Taylor, LPC – MFLC

Licensed Professional Counselor Redstone Arsenal Army Base Huntsville, AL

Ivan Taylor is a Licensed Professional Counselor who joined Team Pearl in January 2023 as a Military Family Life Counselor (MFLC) at Redstone Arsenal Army base in Huntsville, AL. Redstone has a population size of 25,000 civilians and 830 military activity duty service members. In only 7 short months Ivan has successfully increased outreach and her case load by 30%, which has always been a challenge due to the smaller nature of the active-duty presence on the base and also being the only MFLC assigned to the installation. The challenges have not stopped her from overcoming challenges and being an impactful presence on the installation daily. The client has communicated how steadfast and resilient Ivan is with outreach efforts and ensures that she connects with all her patients no matter the age group.

What is the most rewarding part of being an MFLC Counselor?

The best part of being Child and Youth Behavioral Military and Family Life Counselor is that I have the ability to not only provide counseling to individual, and married couples, conduct presentations in and around Redstone, but I am afforded the opportunity to do outreach at Child and Youth Services and Schools i.e. 2 Child Development Centers, School Age Center, Youth Center and Childwise Programs. There I greet and introduce myself, as well as share my role as MFLC to Active-Duty and their families to include, how MFLC can support their children participating in the programs.

What is a typical day like for you?

“No two days are exactly the same, one day I may be presenting or briefing Commanders or transitioning soldiers in the morning, meeting with a couple for Marriage Counseling midday, and reading books to preschoolers in the afternoon, whereas the next day, can be mostly Outreach.”

My daily goal is to assist others in migrating through their stressors, through coaching and insight so that they may be empowered to solve their issues going forth.

What drew you to the counseling field, especially servicing the military and their family members?

More than 16 years of experience has been as a military spouse. My husband and I spent over 10 years in Europe. Working with CYSS in various capacities while my husband served was stressful. “I wish I would have known about MFLC during this stressful time, I would have definitely utilized the services.”

What can we learn about you?

I am a strong supporter of a healthy balance, when not working, I enjoy participating in boxing classes, creating Vegan meals (not a full vegan), and spending time with my husband of 31 years.

In August, we celebrate National Wellness Month, prioritizing your self-care, managing stress, and promoting healthy routines. Create wholesome habits in your lifestyle and focus on self-care to feel like your best self!
Ivan, On behalf of Talent Acquisition, the MFLC Leadership, and Pearl,
Welcome and thank you for your dedicated Service. Connecting, Engaging and Serving our Military Families.
