What is Movember?
It is a month-long campaign that encourages men to grow mustaches and participate in activities to raise awareness about men’s health. Continue reading to find out more about this worldwide movement supporting men’s health awareness.
Did you know that men are at higher risk for many serious diseases, including heart disease, lung cancer, and HIV? Men also experience unique health problems that don’t affect women, like prostate cancer. This is what drove the founders of Movember to start a movement for men’s health in 2003.
Since 2003, when it started with just 30 “Mo Bros”, Movember has funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects around the world, challenging the status quo, shaking up men’s health research and transforming the way health services reach and support men. Today the movement now claims a headcount of over 6 million!
Movember has taken on three of the biggest health issues affecting men: mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Men are dying on average 4.5 years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons. As a result of this movement, men are living healthier, longer lives.
A growing number of men – around 10.8M globally – are facing life with a prostate cancer diagnosis. Globally, testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men. And across the world, one man dies by suicide every minute of every day, with males accounting for 69% of all suicides.
Movember is uniquely placed to address this crisis on a global scale. The movement funds groundbreaking projects all over the world, engaging men where they are to understand what works best and accelerate change.
